About us

The History Department has a long history of its own at Concordia, having been the first department in the Humanities/Social Science sector to offer a doctoral programme. Over thirty years later, the Department continues to offer degrees at the undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels. Its graduates occupy positions, not only in the world of education, but also in such fields as law, journalism, and the various levels of government. By showing students a variety of ways to study the past, the History Department is training inquisitive minds for the twenty-first century.

We are located in the heart of downtown Montreal in facilities on the 10th floor of the McConnell Library Building. In addition to a fully equipped computer lab and seminar room, the Department also hosts three research centres associated with our strong emphases on public history and genocide and human rights studies.

The History Department’s Commitment to Teaching

The Department of History offers a range of courses from the introductory to the advanced, covering the globe for more than two thousand years of history. We teach subjects of enduring interest as well as new and exciting fields. The Department and the University offer access to multimedia facilities, aiding students’ learning through image and sound as well as the written word. Among the Department’s faculty are a number of award-winning professors. Commitment to effective and accessible instruction is a hallmark of the Department.
